Hi, I’m Dr. Raphael Darvish with Skinpeccable Dermatology and Cosmetic Laser Center here in Los Angeles, California. And, I’m here today to discuss with you how to treat an acne cyst at home. So, as many people with acne know, once in a while you get a painful red cyst, generally on the face. Can be very annoying, because it’s on your face, and you’re going out, and you don’t want to have that pimple.
So, the gold standard for treatment of that is generally to come into your dermatologist’s office, he puts a drop of steroid in it, and poof, in 24 hours, it’s pretty much gone. If you can’t make it into your doctor’s office, there are a number of very good options.
Firstly though, do not pick the acne lesion. It’s something that almost everybody does, but it leads to scarring, and is the worst option. So, hands off, do not pick the lesion.
In terms of the treatment options, the most ancient is going to be, take a towel, put it under some warm water, and apply it to the acne cyst. Do that for around three to minutes. Obviously, don’t put it in too hot of water, because as if you put it in too hot of water, you’re going to end up with some other issues on your skin. So, just warm water is fine with a towel. Heat has been shown to decrease the intensity of acne cysts.
Topically, cream wise, the best option is going to be a benzoyl peroxide cream. So, generally benzoyl peroxide creams are found at the pharmacy. Easily Oxy is an example of one. And, generally, these preparations range up to around 10 percent benzoyl peroxide.
They dry the acne lesion out very well, and I would say benzoyl peroxide is going to be your treatment of choicefor an acne cyst. Now, beware though. Benzoyl peroxide bleaches clothing, bleaches bedsheets. So, if you’re going to put on some benzoyl peroxide on an acne lesion and go to sleep, you want to put on a lot of benzoyl peroxide.
The more caked on it is, I would say the better, if you’re going to do it at nighttime. But, if you’re going to put it on and go to sleep, you have to be very careful that if that benzoyl peroxide touches clothes or touches bedsheets, it can bleach it. So, just be mindful of that.
Next, there are some salycilic acid creams that are good. Again, they dry out the lesion. I would say they’re not as good as benzoyl peroxide, but they’re pretty close. There are other options, including electronic devices such as the Zeno, that direct heat in a very directed way.
You hold it up, and it provides a very deep heat to the acne cysts, and removes around 50 percent of acne cysts. You want to use that as soon as the acne cyst comes up. And then, lastly, there are the real old school home remedies, including peppermint and oatmeal, that don’t really work very well, but are available, and generally not recommended from a dermatologist’s perspective. I’m Dr. Raphael Darvish, and that’s a brief overview on how to treat an acne cyst at home.
